1995/B.Tech/CH Professor and Associate Chair, University of Texas, Austin USA
Dr. Venkatraghavan Ganesan is an Endowed Professor in Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his bachelor’s in chemical engineering from IITM in 1995, followed by his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from MIT in 1999. He went on to work as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of California at Santa Barbara in the material research laboratory before joining UT Austin as a Faculty Fellow at the Centre for Nano- and Molecular Science and Technology and Institute for Theoretical Chemistry. He has been at UT Austin ever since and works in the area of Advanced Materials, Polymers and Nanotechnology.
Prof. Ganesan’s research has focussed on the emerging field of “designer materials”, wherein materials are designed to have properties required for a specific application. His research has pervaded a common theme of following a multi-scale approach, combining molecular simulations with continuum level numerical methods. Prof. Ganesan’s research has always been geared towards addressing real-world phenomena relevant to areas such as water purification, energy storage, and biophysics.
Teaching and Research are the two primary aspects of Dr. Ganesan’s professional career and are evident from the journals he authored, positions held, and the honours and awards bestowed upon him over his 20-years of professional excellence. Throughout his illustrious career up to this point, Dr. Ganesan has authored over 190 peer-reviewed journal articles, while also serving on the Editorial Advisory Board of Macromolecules. He has also made over 100 presentations at national and international conferences, doctoral and faculty consortia, universities, and other forums. Dr. Ganesan has also held office at various professional societies, such as the American Physical Society. As a recognition of his immense contribution to material science, Prof. Ganesan has been bestowed with several honours and awards including being elected as a fellow of American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and professorship appointments.
For his remarkable accomplishments and commitment to the field of chemical engineering, material science and academia, IIT Madras and its alumni are proud to bestow the Distinguished Alumni Award for the year 2022 upon Prof. Venkatraghavan Ganesan.
