Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman

Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman is an exceptional technology and business executive who has had a tremendous impact measured in the hundreds of millions of US dollars across many countries, including India, APAC (Australia, Brunei, Singapore, and Malaysia), USA, Middle East and Europe. He was an Executive General Manager at GE Power Conversion in Bangalore, focusing on launching new businesses in e-Mobility and Distributed Solar for the company. Prior to that, he was a Program Director of Special Initiatives at IBM Research in Bangalore, working on Internet of Things (IoT) technologies applied to solar and agribusiness. He served as Chief Scientist at IBM Research in Australia, working on natural resources, supply chains, and clean energy.
It was unusual to move into these different areas after being a successful academic professor and researcher in computer networking at RPI, where he received tenure and was promoted to Full Professor. His industrial work is broad, spanning a gamut of areas across computer science and electrical engineering: Internet of Things (IoT), AI, and machine learning, energy and utilities solutions/platforms (renewables/solar/wind, EVs, storage, smart grids), natural resources (agri-business, mining, water, oil & gas), transportation (electric vehicles (EV) & shared transportation), network quality of service and congestion control in both ATM networks and the Internet, and wireless & mobile networks. He has excelled at converting technical insights into business outcomes at GE and IBM and, as a highly visible technologist, has built up strong technical teams wherever he has worked.
Shri Shivkumar Kalyanaraman’s awards include Master Inventor at IBM (2017) and election to the Indian National Academy of Engineering (2015), IEEE Fellow (2010), and ACM Distinguished Scientist (2010). He has written over 200 papers with 9800 citations according to Google Scholar, and has filed over 50 patents (35 issued). He has also served in leadership roles at several top conferences, such as ACM e-Energy 2015, IEEE INFOCOM 2008, and ACM SIGCOMM 2010, and on the editorial board of IEEE/ACM Transactions of Networking. As a professor, he supervised PhD students at RPI.
In addition to his success in business and technology, he is also passionate about classical music and has a wide global audience visiting his carnatic music education website regularly.
