SBI General Insurance & IIT Madras Launch Affordable Breast Cancer Therapy Device

A recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) revealed that breast cancer constitutes 28.2 per cent of all female cancers in India

SBI General Insurance has joined forces with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, the former informed in a press statement on Monday. The collaboration aims to usher in a groundbreaking Thermal Therapy Device, poised to revolutionise the landscape of breast cancer treatment, especially in advanced stages, the statement read.

Spearheading this CSR initiative, SBI General Insurance is set to catalyse positive change within the healthcare industry. The collaborative technology developed at IIT Madras seeks to offer an indigenous and cost-effective solution tailored for advanced-stage breast cancer patients. The focal point of the Thermal Therapy Device is to deliver hyperthermia as an adjuvant therapy, enhancing the efficacy of radio and chemotherapy treatments. A recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) revealed that breast cancer constitutes 28.2 per cent of all female cancers in India, emphasising the urgency for innovative solutions.

Late-stage diagnoses, limited adjuvant treatments, and financial constraints pose significant hurdles. The Thermal Therapy Device, backed by SBI General Insurance, addresses these challenges by ensuring affordability, patient comfort, and effectiveness during hyperthermia treatment.

Mr. Kishore Kumar Poludasu, MD and CEO of SBI General Insurance, expressed, “Every 4 minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in India. We are dedicated to addressing this challenge, and our collaboration with IIT Madras marks a significant step in driving healthcare innovation. Together, we aim to contribute to the broader goal of promoting indigenous solutions and innovation in healthcare, making a positive impact on the lives of breast cancer patients.”

Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations) at IIT Madras, added, “With the support of SBI General Insurance, this breakthrough technology developed at IIT Madras has been transformed into an affordable ‘Make in India’ Thermal Therapy device, set to revolutionise advanced breast cancer treatment in the country.”

This transformative initiative by SBI General Insurance holds the potential to bring about lasting positive change in the lives of breast cancer patients in India.
