Dr. Suvinay Subramanian

2011/BT/EE Software Engineer, AI and Infrastructure, Google, USA

Dr. Suvinay Subramanian is a preeminent computer architect and systems researcher whose pioneering work has placed him at the forefront of some of the most consequential advances in artificial intelligence (AI) hardware. He earned his B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 2011. He subsequently earned his S.M. (2013) and Ph.D. (2018) in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he conducted research on novel computer architectures for parallel and high-performance computing.

Since joining Google in 2018, Dr. Suvinay has emerged as a central architect of Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), the custom AI supercomputers that power Google’s most critical capabilities, including large language models (LLMs) such as Gemini and large recommendation models that power Google Search, Ads, and YouTube. His most transformative architectural contribution is the SparseCore, a novel dataflow processor for sparse and irregular AI workloads that delivers a two-fold improvement in training performance for large recommendation models that generate billions of dollars in revenue. He has also driven high-impact performance engineering work including the development of FlatAttention, a multi-operator fusion technique widely deployed for Gemini, and has contributed to the codesign of emerging deep learning paradigms such as mixture-of-experts and sparsity.

Dr. Suvinay’s research contributions span computer architecture, parallel computing, and AI systems, and have been published at the most prestigious venues in the field including ISCA, MICRO, ASPLOS, SIGCOMM, ICLR, and ICML. His doctoral work on the Swarm architecture which enables near-linear scaling of difficult-to-parallelize irregular applications to hundreds of cores, was recognised with IEEE Micro “Top Picks” distinctions. He holds key US patents for innovations in programmable accelerators, sparse processing units, and streaming transfer architectures for AI developed at Google. In 2024, he was honored with the ACM SIGMICRO Early Career Award, one of the highest international accolades for a computer architecture researcher in the early stages of their career.

Beyond his technical feats, Dr. Suvinay is a dedicated community leader and a proud ambassador for his alma mater. He co-hosts the Computer Architecture Podcast, reaching thousands of listeners world-wide to make his field more accessible. A trained practitioner of Carnatic vocal music, he has also been an active participant in cultural communities, serving as Vice President of South India Fine Arts (SIFA), fostering Indian classical arts in the Bay Area.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements in computer architecture and artificial intelligence systems, his pioneering contributions to the hardware that powers the world’s most advanced AI capabilities, and his commitment to research, community, and the broader advancement of his field, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and its alumni are proud to confer Dr. Suvinay Subramanian with the Young Alumni Achiever Award for the year 2026.
