Supreme Court Signs MoU with IIT Madras for Collaborating On Usage Of Artificial Intelligence & Technology

The Supreme Court has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Madras for collaborating on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies for transcription tools, summarization of page transcript, translation Tool, exclusive streaming platform for court trials, process automation and large languages models. The move comes after CJI DY Chandrachud’s visit to IIT Madras in July this year.

As per the press release by the Supreme Court, “The collaboration which will also also focus to leverage AI Tools in Capacity Building & Training, creating e-Learning Platform and ICT skill development courses, is a significant leap forward in the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) and capacity building of the legal domain.” The MoU is aimed to facilitate the digital transformation of the Indian judiciary, aligning it with the vision for a more efficient and technologically advanced legal ecosystem to improve access to justice.

In his visit at the 60th Convocation Ceremony of IIT Madras, the CJI had remarked how AI, which has immense potential, can also be used to perpetuate discrimination and unfair treatment. He had added that the real redemption of technology lied in enabling freedoms and human rights of every individual. Technology has the ability to make us resilient to future threats that loom over future freedoms, he had said.

The CJI has been a strong advocate for the use of technology in the judiciary and has even asserted that “technology is not a matter of choice” anymore and is very much a part of the legal system.
