The Indian Institute of Technology – Madras (IIT-M) is set to conduct a detailed analysis of water bodies, stormwater drains, and manhole gaps in Chennai to assess the accumulation of silt, waste, and sewage. This initiative, in collaboration with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), aims to address longstanding issues of sewage contamination and inadequate cleaning methods.
The inspection follows numerous complaints about water hyacinth, debris, and plastic waste obstructing canals and stormwater drains across the city. Local authorities are actively responding to these issues, particularly in areas like Madipakkam, Thoraipakkam-Pallavaram Radial Road, and Virugambakkam Canal. The results of IIT-M’s trial analysis, expected soon, will inform future strategies for maintaining Chennai’s drainage infrastructure.
