IIT Madras sees 51% increase in firms offering internships

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras recorded a 51% increase in the number of companies visiting the campus this year for internship recruitment, according to a statement from the premier technology institute.

Texas Instruments, JP Morgan Chase & Co., Adobe, Procter and Gamble, and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories are among the recruiters that offered internships to the class of 2024, the institute said, adding that the number of students who secured jobs was 17% higher than last year. The institute said 19 offers from seven companies were for stints abroad.

IIT Madras’ internship drive was conducted in hybrid mode, with international offers coming from companies in the US, the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore and The Netherlands.

This time round, there was an increase of 19% in the internship offers received on the first day of the campus recruitment drive. The internship drive was held in two sessions–on August 5 and 12, according to the IIT.

“An internship is now an essential component for the launching of a successful and fulfilling career for students,” Sathyan Subbiah, advisor (placement & internship), IIT Madras, said. “It enables them to imply their skills and knowledge acquired during their curriculum in a real-life work environment.”

This year, the job offers are slightly lower at the engineering colleges compared with previous years, ET had reported earlier.

Subbiah said, “I’m happy with the efforts made by our team to enable students to get internships despite turbulent conditions.”
