IIT Madras Professor’s book on Photoelasticity published by UK’s Institute of Physics

IIT Madras Professor’s book has been published by UK’s Institute of Physics. A book on Photoelasticity by Prof. K. Ramesh brings out the re-emergence of the subject and its diverse uses in various fields.

Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Madras Professor’s book on Photoelasticity has reached the hall of fame by getting published by UK’s Institute of Physics. A digital book called ‘Developments in Photoelasticity – A Renaissance,’ has been written by faculty member Prof. K. Ramesh and has been based on decades of research by the Professor and his students at the Institute.

The digital book was released today, on February 14, 2022 in a virtual event. The release was done by Krishna Mahesh, Managing Director of Sundaram Brake Linings Ltd. and Founder-CEO of Sundaram Medical Devices (P) Ltd, in the presence of Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), IIT Madras, and other faculty and staff of the Institute.

This book on Photoelasticity will be a landmark in the re-emergence of the field of study. The digital book has one volume and focuses of understanding complex problems like understanding biological systems through locomotion, improve agricultural production by understanding stresses in plant roots, role of needle shape in epidural applications and so on.

Talking about the book, Prof. K. Ramesh, Mahesh K Chair Professor, Department of Applied Mechanics, IIT Madras, said, “The engineering colleges across the country need to restart their laboratory on Photoelasticity – in view of the great strides the technique has made in the last two decades and in offering hope for solving emerging problems in diverse fields. Instead of a real laboratory, many could benefit by setting up a virtual polariscope at a fraction of the cost of the actual setup.”

Speaking on the impact of this book, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said, “What is really striking about this book is the applications of this research, which range from plant biology to semiconductor packaging. This can be a game changer, when implemented in the field.”
