The consortium is coordinated by IIT Madras as a group comprising of start-ups, government bodies, industries, and academia. Further, CAVE will help in applications in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality, and haptics. Industrial sponsors, participants from the industries, and the government will collaborate on the research.

CAVE intends to promote the engineering of XR and help in haptic technology development. Further, it aims to be a resource for the industry, academia, and every other section of society. One of its goals is to adopt XR and haptics in India particularly and also globally.

Prof. M. Manivannan, Department of Applied Mechanics, IIT Madras, coordinator of CAVE highlighted the key role it will be playing. He said, “A strong research group such as IIT Madras is needed for innovations in XR and haptics. As an academia-initiated consortium, innovation is given priority, much more resource is available for every member, and together can reach a wider audience and achieve grandeur missions.”

He also added that in the era of ‘Make in India’, an India-specific consortium for XR and haptics will have important impacts. Further, IIT Madras also organized a webinar for Centre of Excellence on Virtual Reality and Haptics. It was integrated by Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Principal Secretary, Department of Information Technology, Government of Tamil Nadu.

In his inaugural address, Dr. Mittal mentioned that such a consortium is needed for India for its democratizing experience.
