Shri. Giridhar Aramane, a distinguished 1988-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, stands as an example of exemplary service and visionary leadership in the realm of public administration. Throughout his illustrious career spanning over three decades, Shri Aramane has demonstrated unwavering dedication, integrity, and commitment to the welfare of the nation.
He graduated with a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad and completed his M.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He also completed his M.A. in Economics from Kakatiya University, Warangal. Shri. Aramane’s journey began with a strong foundation in academic excellence and leadership. As the 39th Defense Secretary of independent India, Shri. Aramane’s leadership has been instrumental in spearheading efforts to modernise the country’s defence forces and fostering a new defence technology ecosystem aimed at reducing dependency on foreign exports. His visionary leadership and strategic initiatives have propelled India’s defence capabilities to unprecedented heights, bringing in a new era of self-reliance and indigenization in defence technology.
Prior to assuming the mantle of Defense Secretary, Shri. Aramane served as the Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, where his dynamic leadership and astute management skills played a pivotal role in driving the nation’s infrastructure development agenda amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Apart from Cabinet Secretariat, Shri. Aramane looked after the Exploration Division in the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas; and was Executive Director in-charge of inspections in the Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority. In the Andhra Pradesh Government, he served as Principal Secretary in Urban Development Department, Managing Director of AP State Finance Corporation, and Secretary (Finance Department). He also held the post of the Collector & DM of Chittoor and Khammam Districts.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the nation, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and its alumni are proud to confer Shri. Giridhar Aramane with the Distinguished Alumni Award for the year 2024.
