R Jayashree, 18, lost her father when she was studyingin Class VI. Her mother, who was diagnosed with cancer four yearsago, did not give up. The mother, R Dhanalakshmi, kept a tiffinstall to support the family.
Jayashree, a resident of Choolaimedu area and a ChennaiCorporation school student who passed the Class XII board examon Monday, said, “With an income of a few thousand rupees, mymother kept going. We live in a small house and we took care ofeach other. Sometimes, I also take care of cooking and housework, while juggling studies. My teachers helped me the best.”
The Puliyur corporation school student scored 539 out of 600 inthe Class XII board exams. She scored 99 in computer science, 93,in Tamil and 90 in physics.
Jayashree will soon be joining a four-year online course on data science offered by IIT-Madras. Jayashree wasamong 200 students whom IIT-M through an entrance exam conducted last year. More than 5,000 students the entrance exam. The course is offered under the ‘Anaivarukkum IITM (IIT-M for all)’ initiative of the premier instituteto provide quality education to economically weaker sections of the society.
” I am happy to have been selected and have received my call letter,” she said.
Puliyur corporation school headmaster Dakshina Murthy said Jayashree has been struggling a lot to study and spend extra time at coaching classes. “Despite her struggles, she has put up a fight and got admission to the IIT course,” she said.
