Greetings from Department of Chemistry, IIT Madras!

From a humble beginning in 1961, the department has grown from strength to strength for the past 5+ decades in terms of teaching, research and infrastructure development. Today the Department is well endowed with necessary infrastructure to carry out chemical research in various diversified areas. The Department has been able to attract young, accomplished and talented individuals for its faculty positions. Faculty members of the Department are very active and able to attract funds from various national and international agencies to carry out their research in frontier areas. Three centers are associated with the Department, namely the National Centre for Catalysis Research (NCCR), center for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy (MRI/MRS) and Thematic Unit of Excellence (TUE) for Nanoscience, all of them funded by Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi. The Department is equipped with state of the art instruments known and required to carry out advanced scientific research.

The past students have brought laurels to the Department by excelling in their profession and life. This is evident from the fact that Chemistry is among top in the list of Distinguished Alumnus Awardees (DAA) of our Institute.

The Department wishes to remain in touch its alumni and update them periodically of the status of the Department. The long term wish is to have a close network of alumni of the Department. To this effect the Department is making a sincere effort to reach out all its past members. In this connection, the first reunion of all alumni of Department of Chemistry, IIT Madras is planned during February 08 and 09 (Saturday and Sunday), 2014. This initiation is the beginning of a long journey of bonding with the department and henceforth we plan to sustain a network of all alumni of the department. We also request you to pass on this message to all the past members of this Department that you are in touch with.
