Brief bio of the speaker Prof. Ravikumar Bhaskaran

Educational Qualifications: Ph.D in Civil Engineering, Batch of 1976, IIT Madras

Professor Ravikumar Bhaskaran is presently Adviser/Consultant on Engineering Education and Educational Management based out of Chennai. He has had a rich and varied experience in a variety of Institutions and Organizations in different capacities, over decades. He is presently the Honorary Adviser External Affairs for IIT Gandhinagar since Dec.2011, Adviser for Centre for Career Development, IIT Guwahati, and a Consultant for the Career Development and Corporate Relations Centre, IIT Ropar for over the past two years. Earlier he was Adviser for Career Development and Placement Centre, Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies Hyderabad for a year 2013-14 and the Career Development Centre, IIT Bhubaneswar for 18 months 2011-13 and Consultant for T&P, IIT Patna for 3 months from Dec.2011-Feb.2012.

Prof.Bhaskaran graduated in Civil Engineering from Government Engineering College Thrissur in 1963 and started his Career as an Associate Lecturer in Civil Engineering at PSG College of Technology Coimbatore. In 1964, he went over to College of Engineering Guindy as a Senior Fellow under the Technical Teacher Training Programme of the then Min. of Education Government of India and completed his M.Sc. Engineering in Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering from there as a part of the 3-year programme.  On completion of the programme in 1967, he was posted by the Government of India as a Lecturer in Civil Engineering at REC Calicut. In 1969, he went to IIT Madras for his Ph.D., on study leave from REC, reverted to REC on completion of his experimental work in 1973, submitted his thesis in 1975 and got his Ph.D. in 1976. His career took a 90 Degree turn in 1976 when he got selected as an Under Secretary at UPSC to look after Examination Reforms. He was promoted as Deputy Secretary in Jan. 1978 and was most part the co-ordinating Deputy Secretary of Examination Reforms Branch of the Commission. While at UPSC he had an opportunity to also look after many other functions related to recruitment of S&T personnel for Central Government Services.

In 1982, he joined IIT Kharagpur as Professor in charge Training and Placement. At IIT Kharagpur he was a Member, Senate and Member, Committee of HODs and Deans, for 21 years. He held many positions at the Institute, both academic and administrative, including a two-year term as Senate Nominee in Board of Governors of the Institute and Member of Finance Committee, Managing Director Technology Foundation dealing with Alumni Affairs and Dean Continuing Education and Principal QIP Coordinator. In 1987 -88, he went over to Educational Consultants India Ltd. as Director Technical and Head of the Technical Division keeping a lien on the post at IIT Kharagpur. In 2004, he took up the position as Director (Admin. and Academic) at IIITMK on an invitation from Government of Kerala for a year, again keeping a lien on his post at IIT.

On superannuation from IIT Kharagpur in 2005, Prof.Bhaskaran joined Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering, Sriperambadur as Principal till 2008 and continued in the college as Director till 2010. Since 2010 he has been engaged in helping many Institutions in chasing excellence and providing Career Advising to students at various levels. While he was at IIT Kharagpur he used to visit a number of Institutions giving motivating talks to their students and has been continuing the same activity post retirement. Some of the Institutions that he has visited in 2016-17 include LMNIIT Jaipur and IIT Tirupati.

Professor Bhaskaran is a Life Member of ISTE as well as ISTD besides being a Life Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India). He has a number of publications including many on Engineering Education in Indian Journal of Technical Education and has presented an Invited Paper at ISTE Convention held at REC Calicut and contributed an Invited Paper on “Placement Services in Indian Institutions” in the International Journal of Engineering Education.

Professor Bhaskaran has travelled extensively in USA along with Director of IIT Kharagpur in 1999 and 2000 for raising funds from Alumni for the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Institute (2001-02), having been also the Organizing Secretary of the Celebrations besides being in Charge of Alumni Affairs at the Institute. He has also travelled on work to Paris and Abu Dhabi.

Professor Bhaskaran is an Active Member or PAN IIT ALUMNI INDIA, He was a Member of the Steering Committee and a Member of the Programmes Committee of the Global Conference of PAN IIT Alumni held in 2008 at Chennai. He also Chaired the Session on “Engineering Education – How to improve the Quality and Reach” at that Conference. He was also a Member of the Programmes Committee of PAN IIT ALUMNI GLOBAL CONCLAVE at Kolkata in 2012. As Organizing Secretary of the Golden Jubilee of IIT Kharagpur he has been associated with organization of many National and International Conferences as well as the Golden Jubilee Lecture Series associating Nobel Laurates and other distinguished global leaders in S&T in 2001-02.
