dear fRIENDS

Its 40 years since we graduated from IIT Madras. Forty wonderful, tumultuous, exciting and chalenging years .....where we've all had a few highs, learnt a few lessons and grown a few inches . The one thing that has stayed constant for many of us in the last 40 years is the great friendships we formed on campus . Let's celebrate that this year !

MEETING PLANS

Sedona , Arizona May 4th to 7th

A US reunion fairly early in the year so those who cannot come to India later on at least get to meet some " local " friends here.

Coordinators : Nagaraj Katti

Meghalaya trip in the Cherry Blossom season in the middle of November 16th to 20th

Vishnampet Sundaram was the one who first persuaded us all to meet somewhere at least once a year. He started us off with a bang with the Goa trip in 2017 , followed by Sri Lanka in 2018 and Cordoba in 2019. We lost him unexpectedly in 2020. I think its time we restarted these annual fun trips.

A CAUSE WORTH SUPPORTING

Dear Friends,

I would like to introduce a project that I feel is worth getting behind. Professor Manivannan is the head of XTIC, IITM's Experiential Technology Innovation Centre and maybe the first such AR/VR and Haptics lab in India . He has created training modules for areas ranging from fire fighting to archaeologists exploring Keezhadi to nurses working in fertility clinics ! According to him, artificial insemination is a try as you go process and in any clinic the first 20 patients are the guinea pigs . His touch lab has developed a fetal heartbeat monitor that separates the heart beat of the mother and the baby and can send warning signals to a doctor far away . It is a very simple device that can be worn on a belt . We were able to get him CSR support for that project from Billdesk. He is in the news this week for signing an agreement with ISRO to create training modules for them.

The project I am excited about is a plan to set up VR science labs in rural and small town schools that lack actual lab facilities. He's had discussions with the TN govt on implementation. It can be tried out in some govt schools in Chennai first and then expanded out into the state and then countrywide. That's the plan anyway.

He needs 3 Crores over 3 years , do you think our batch can take this on ? We will get a naming opportunity in his lab plus we will be supporting something with national impact , and making high school science education cool !

Prof Mani's Profile XTIC Project Velvi details

According to the Diro, if all our alumni pledge one week's income a year for 3 years IITM will have a corpus of 1 Billion $ ! My ask is exactly the same : Can we each pledge a week's income / year to support Prof Mani's Velvi project for 3 years ? Please let me know what you think, thanks
